Case Study: How DFM Optimization Improved Sheet Metal Enclosure Delivery

 

Last year, a European industrial automation equipment company approached us to customize this galvanized sheet metal electrical enclosure for their new-generation industrial control equipment.

The drawings were made by their own engineers, and the functional designs have been verified. However, during our DFM review, we discovered some potential issues. There is a high risk of panel warping, interface hole position deviation, and uneven assembly clearance. If we proceed with direct mold production, repeated mold modifications and trial production would seriously delay the delivery and disrupt the customer’s schedule.

  • We redesigned the stamping and bending sequence. — The enclosure body was formed first to release material stress. At the same time, the front panel and openings were processed afterward to reduce springback-related dimensional deviations.

  • The bending tooling was designed with segmented, adjustable inserts — Allowing minor dimensional compensation during trial production without requiring a complete mold
